Map sources

We draw the maps on Routie prints from open data. The print itself carries only a short line with the names OpenStreetMap and OpenMapTiles and, where the map reaches the area of one of the relief sources listed below, that source’s short credit. The leaflet in the parcel and the product page lead to this page. Here are all the sources, their licences and the notices the licences ask for.

OpenStreetMap

Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors (openstreetmap.org/copyright), available under the Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0. The map on a print is a work produced from this data.

The routes of the sample prints (for example Rysy from Štrbské Pleso or Kráľova hoľa from Šumiac) follow roads and paths from OpenStreetMap, © OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL. The times on the sample prints are illustrative.

Derivative database under the ODbL

We draw the map from vector tiles, a database derived from OpenStreetMap under the ODbL 1.0. The base tiles are the unmodified full planet build of the OpenFreeMap project, made to the OpenMapTiles schema with Planetiler, which OpenFreeMap offers for download. We build the layer of hiking and ski routes ourselves with Planetiler from OpenStreetMap data of the same date.

Under section 4.6 of the ODbL we provide, on request and free of charge, a machine-readable copy of the entire derivative database your print’s map was produced from, or a description of the method used to make it. Please write to info@routie.sk and tell us which print it is about.

OpenMapTiles

The vector tiles follow the © OpenMapTiles schema. The schema’s design is licensed under CC BY 4.0, its code under BSD-3-Clause.

OpenFreeMap

The tiles are built by the OpenFreeMap project (MIT licence). The attribution OpenFreeMap asks for in print: OpenFreeMap © OpenMapTiles Data from OpenStreetMap. Thank you.

The tiles also contain the free data of Natural Earth (public domain) and Wikidata (CC0).

Relief and terrain heights

We compute the relief shading and the contour lines from the digital terrain model of the Mapterhorn project (code under BSD-3-Clause), which combines the sources listed below. We changed the data: we converted it into tiles and computed the relief shading and the contour lines from it.

Copernicus WorldDEM-30

Where no other source covers an area, the terrain heights come from Copernicus GLO-30, for the whole of Japan too: we do not use the Japanese relief derived from GSI data. The notices the Copernicus licence requires, in its own words:

produced using Copernicus WorldDEM-30 © DLR e.V. 2010-2014 and © Airbus Defence and Space GmbH 2014-2018 provided under COPERNICUS by the European Union and ESA; all rights reserved

The organisations in charge of the Copernicus programme by law or by delegation do not incur any liability for any use of the Copernicus WorldDEM-30.

Our use of this data does not mean that Routie’s activities are officially endorsed by the data provider, its licensor or the Copernicus programme.

Relief sources credited on the print too

The terms of these four sources ask for the source to be credited on the work itself. We therefore add their short credit to the credit line of a print whenever its map reaches their area. In full:
